Trace before wiring
Follow power, ground, inputs, processing, and outputs in that order. Never guess a pin from package shape alone.
Connect with power off
Make short, labelled connections and share a common ground only where the schematic requires it.
Inspect every joint
Check continuity, polarity, adjacent shorts, and loose connections before the first power-up.
Open all source diagrams and build views 1 visuals

Confirm the hardware-only control path.
This project does not include firmware in the source. The circuit itself provides the required behaviour.
How to connect
- Match every controller label to the circuit view and source pin map.
- Join grounds before signal wires when separate low-voltage supplies are used.
- Keep motors, relays, pumps, and other loads on a suitable driver and external supply.
Common mistakes
Reversed VCC/GND, board-label versus GPIO-number confusion, missing common ground, and charge-only USB cables.
Troubleshoot
Disconnect loads, continuity-test one path at a time, then test with a current limit.
Software preparation
No IDE, board package, library, or firmware upload is required for this project.
If you add a programmable controller as an extension, document its pin map separately.
How to upload code
The original design is implemented entirely in hardware, so proceed after verifying the circuit and supply.
Assemble, deploy, test, and troubleshoot.
Use the complete source notes in build order, then pass the final checks before calling the project finished.
Build in functional stages
- Power and regulation
- Controller or processing stage
- Inputs and sensors
- Outputs and loads
- Enclosure and strain relief
Power up safely
- Inspect unpowered continuity first
- Apply the lowest safe current limit
- Measure supply rails before signals
- Add one load at a time
- Record expected and actual results
Work from simple to complex
- Confirm power, ground, polarity, and orientation
- Compare each pin with the source
- Test inputs separately from outputs
- Replace only one variable at a time
- Power off before every correction
Follow the documented instructions.
These notes come from this project's source and remain in their original order.
Project overview
Project build noteWeather Bot
This project will teach you how to build a global clock weather bot with an Arduino Mega and an ESP8266 (AT mode).
Features
Project build note1. Personalized bot with an LCD screen for a mouth, a potentiometer for a nose, and green LEDs for eyes 2. Using serial communication to choose the city or country 3. Putting the city or country you want into EEPROM memory. Using OpenWeatherMap API and ESP8266 to get geolocation data, weather data, and the country code. Using TimezoneDB API and ESP8266 to get local time. 4. putting the local time into a DS3231 real-time clock module; showing the local time and weather on the LCD screen; showing the chosen country's code on the LCD screen; turning on LEDs based on the weather (a yellow LED next to a picture of the sun turns on when it's sunny, and blue LEDs turn on and off based on how much it rains, etc.).
Components Required
Project build noteArduino Mega ESP8266 Logic Level Converter 3 x blue LED 2 x green LED 2 x white LED yellow LED - DS3231 RTC (kinda optional but makes things much easier) 16X2 LCD screen (or bigger)
wires, wires, wires 9 x 220 ohm resistor 10K ohm potentiometer a box (plastic transparent box in this case) white papers adhesive tape scalpel crayons Open Weather Map Api Key TimezoneDB Api Key
First, you need to cut holes for the LCD screen and the potentiometer. The LCD screen should show the mouth, and the potentiometer should show the nose, so just leave the right amount of space. On a piece of paper, you should also cut these holes. You should draw three raindrops on a piece of paper to represent the three blue LEDs, a sun to represent the yellow LED, a cloud to represent the white LED, and one or two lightning bolts to represent the other white LED. You can decorate the eyes and nose however you like, but don't forget to put green LEDs behind the eyes. If your box isn't clear, you'll need to cut holes behind each of your drawings to let the light from the LEDs shine through. When you are done, you can put the papers on a box by taping them on.
Wiring ESP8266 to LLC
RST -> LV GND -> LV
Project build noteGND Tx -> Tx Rx -> Rx Wiring Arduino to LLC
GND -> LV GND
Project build noteTx -> Rx Rx -> Tx Wiring Arduino to DS3231 RTC
SDA -> SDA
Project build noteSince LCD has many pins and it would take much space to describe how to connect LCD to Arduino, I will not describe it but you can reference to the picture above. Same goes for the LEDs. Since Arduino Mega runs on 5V and ESP8266 runs on 3.3V, you can't (or at least shouldn't) connect them directly. To lower the voltage for ESP8266, you should use Logic Level Converter (LLC), as in this project, or another method.
You built Arduino + ESP8266: How to Make a DIY World Clock and Weather Bot.
You followed the full workflow from understanding the mission to testing the finished project. That is a real engineering achievement - well done.
