STEP 4 / 6 · Source code

Confirm the hardware-only control path.

This project does not include firmware in the source. The circuit itself provides the required behaviour.

01

How to connect

  1. Match every controller label to the circuit view and source pin map.
  2. Join grounds before signal wires when separate low-voltage supplies are used.
  3. Keep motors, relays, pumps, and other loads on a suitable driver and external supply.

Common mistakes

Reversed VCC/GND, board-label versus GPIO-number confusion, missing common ground, and charge-only USB cables.

Troubleshoot

Disconnect loads, continuity-test one path at a time, then test with a current limit.

02

Software preparation

No IDE, board package, library, or firmware upload is required for this project.

If you add a programmable controller as an extension, document its pin map separately.

03

How to upload code

The original design is implemented entirely in hardware, so proceed after verifying the circuit and supply.

01

Project overview

Project build note

This simple linear timer can be used to control any electrical appliance that needs to be turned off after a certain amount of time, like a small heater or a boiler, as long as the relay-switch parameters match the needs of that appliance. It has low-cost parts and a mix of digital accuracy and simple analog control. This lets you set long timing periods without having to use resistors or capacitors with high values. The circuit is made up of NE555, CD4040, LM358, and CD4069. The timer is pretty easy to understand. It works by converting digital signals to analog ones (DAC). The counter (CD4040) controls the DAC, which is made up of the resistors R2-R23 and the operational amplifiers N1 and N2 that come after them. The second operational amplifier (N2) compares the output of

the DAC to a variable voltage set by VR1 based on how much time is needed. The longer the time is, the higher the count, and the higher the count, the higher the DAC output voltage. Circuit operation As soon as the counter's count gets high enough to make a voltage slightly higher than the voltage set by potentiometer VR1, the second op-amp (N2) goes low to turn off transistor T1 and reset the clock generator built around NE555 (IC2). So, the clock generator doesn't make any more pulses, and the counter stays stuck at this count forever. When you press the reset button (S1), the counter starts over (IC1). So, the DAC's voltage drops to zero. This makes the second op-amp (N2) go high, which turns on clock generator IC2 and makes transistor T1 conduct. The timer goes off again, and at the same time, the relay turns on. A diode is put in parallel with the relay coil to stop the voltage from being made in the opposite direction. The frequency of the clock generator and the supply voltage determine how

02

much time you can get

Project build note

This is because the ratio Vopmax/V changes slowly as the supply voltage changes. Vopmax goes up as V goes up, so this ratio changes slowly with the supply voltage and is thought to be constant. So, if f is 1 Hz and V is 15 volts, the most time that can be used is 3686 seconds, which is just over an hour. With ease, a 555 timer can make a frequency as low as 0.1 Hz. The timer can also handle changes in the voltage supply. At 12V, resistors R24, R25, and capacitor C2 in this circuit make a frequency of about 1.47Hz. After about 1.5 hours, the relay de-energizes to turn off the load. At the same time, the alarm built around IC4 goes off, showing that the appliance is turned off. Put the circuit together on an all- purpose PCB.
